(1)Have you ever expected some “total” surprise on your birthday from your friends although you try to convince yourself such way too convenient/perfect situation would not happen? (but you still expect anyway) (2) and It turns out nothing happened and you were bummed about it. (although you know that nothing would happen)

Personally I had such moment when I was single and if any of you had similar experience, this book might give some nostalgic feeling.

This is Author Rintaro Uchida’s popular series about Wolf-Fox’s friendship. And I have reviewed a few in the past.  (#1 and #2 and #3) You can also find Author Rintaro Uchida’s other series earlier. (#4 and #5)   Just like last time, this is the story about Wolf who is a good friend of Fox.   Let’s see what situation those two animals gone thru.  Here is the storyline.

  • Wolf is excitedly vacuuming his room while humming songs.  He looked super excited and seems he is expecting some guests.
  • After cleaning his room, he keeps talking to himself “Coming ? Or not coming?” while walking around the room.
  • When it gets dark outside, he realized nobody would come visit him.  He got angry and jumped into bed with agony.  After hugging pillow or even biting pillow 😊, he managed to fall asleep finally.
  • Wolf usually forgets about everything happened from previous day, but not this morning.  He still felt sad but does not know why. It is just that his eyes were wet somehow.
  • Wolf trying to figure out why he is sad…  “Perhaps, that is because I am hungry??”   He decided to start cooking and baking his favorite meat dish.
  • After eating, Wolf felt full but his sad feeling never gets away. One drop of tear came out from his eye and landed on the ground.  “I am a wolf for god’s sake, why am I even feeling sad…??”
  • “Ah Ha. That is because I did not get enough expertise.  Just like Wolves do, let’s go out and bully all the guys”  He started pushing all the small animals like Rabbit etc in that area, but he never felt relieved.
  • He suddenly realized “I got it. That is because I had a heart. Hear gives feeling.  Because I have a feeling, it makes me sad. What if I get rid of Heart/Feeling?”
  • He screamed out loud “I DON’T NEED HEART/FEELING! “
  • After shouting, he felt much relieved and much better, as if his feeling had been disappeared.  Whey lying down on the grass and watching the cloud in the sky, Wolf saw FOX rushing to his place.
  • “Dear Wolf! My friend!  Happy Birthday! I have found some awesome birthday gifts. Here they are!”
  • Yet, Heart/Feeling-less Wolf keeps staring at Fox without any emotion. “Aren’t you happy, Wolf?” says Fox.    Wolf says “I guess not. I threw away my heart and I am neither happy nor sad”
  • Fox goes “What?? You threw away your heart and feeling?  That means Happy Day or Happy Moment would never come to you ever!”    “Ever????” says Wolf.  “That is right. Ever, my friend.  Even on Xmas, New Year. Or even if I come visit you to play together!”
  • Both Fox and Wolf started crying.  Wolf meant to try to throw away only “sad feeling” but he might have thrown away the entire heart/feeling.
  • “Wait, I threw away my feeling but still feeling sad enough to cry…” wondering Wolf.   Fox says “It means you still have a feeling!”
  • “Does that mean… My heart/feeling has come back and recovered!?!?”   With great joy, Fox and Wolf holding hands and dancing around.
  • “Indeed, Fox is my great friend…ZZZZ”  While talking to himself, Wolf had happily fell asleep for good night in his bed tonight.
  • From the far distance, Owl looking at Wolf thru window and Owl laughs “ It seems Wolf thought he was having a birthday one day earlier.  His birthday was actually today, not yesterday”😊

“Que Sera, Sera” attitude might be good sometimes, but one should not go too extreme.  Life is full of hardship and we may want to throw away everything at some point and run away, but we should never throw away our heart/feeling to remain as a human!  Hope all the kids should remember this important lesson!
