Japanese version of “Goodnight Moon”.

That is the first thing comes to my mind when I read this book.  I have been looking for great story as “good-night sleep book” but I believe I have finally found one! 😊  This is the story about the boy and small black bear called “Night Bear” who suddenly showed up in Boy’s life and two buddies are on the mission to find little Bear’s mother in the darkness.  Did they find little bear’s mother? (You know it is Children’s book and probably guessed the outcome as happy ending.  Yet the twist is “How did they find Mother?”   Let’s find out by following storyline.

  • In the bed, Boy’s mother is trying to put the boy asleep. But Boy said “Hey Mom. You know what? Last night, there was a very cute visitor to my room by knocking door”  Mom goes “Oh year? I wasn’t aware. Was it a boy or a girl?”
  • Boy said “No, it was a little bear. I gave him a hug and he was so adorable.  The little bear’s name was YORUKUMA (Night Bear)”
  • “I asked Night Bear why did you come visit me so late because you were Night Bear. Little bear said he was looking for his mom. His mother was not there when Night bear got up at night”
  • “So we decided to look for Bear’s mother.  We went the shopping center where they usually buy honey, followed by visiting park where they usually go and play riding the swing.
  • “We could not find her anywhere and we decided to check Night Bear’s house.  Though it was small house and we looked for her everywhere but no luck.
  • “Due to sadness, Nighy Bear started crying and asking Mom’s whereabout.  You know, Night Bear’s teardrops were Black.  Since he cried so hard with lots of tears, it was getting darker and darker around us and finally became total darkness.
  • “I found shooting star in the darkness and said Help! I tried to grab the shooting star while holding bear. And our bodies were lifted”
  • (It turned out Night Bear’s mom was fishing under the dark night sky with stars as a bait)
  • “Where have you been mom?”   “Sorry. Mommy was doing my job fishing.  Here I caught lots of fish. Let’s eat them tomorrow. We cannot eat all, so let’s sell some to fish market and with the money we get, I can get you a bicycle”   Night Bear’s mom carrying little bear and boy to home and put both in the bed.
  • “If we wake up tomorrow, let’s have fish as breakfast, ride the bus to cycle shop and check what kind of bicycle they sell.   So for tonight…
  • “GOOD NIGHT”

The illustration were beautifully done in rather black/dark background color, which provides the atmosphere of night but at the same time, makes the readers to get sleepy as story goes on.  The story text has been written as if Boy was explaining the adventure with Night Bear to Boy’s Mom and illustration are describing the scenes of the unique adventure of Boy. Yet the on the last “GOOD NIGHT” page , scene suddenly changed to Boy’s “Real” Life and Boy was holding his teddy bear in his bed, while Boy’s mom was standing by his side, tapping him to sleep.   What a beautiful way to end the story by connecting Boy’s imagination world to Real world!
