“Good-bye isn’t sad thing at all. Good-bye will lead you to meet someone new”  This is the key message of this book. I didn’t expect this story would be such philosophical, and it surely made me think all the good-byes I personally had and indeed get to meet someone new in new place.  Think about your high school to colleges to office etc. All the transitions involved many good-byes but indeed lead us to new friends.  This book would be great for the readers in transition (from Kindergarten to Elementary school. Or somebody who is moving from one place to another).   This is Mr. Rintaro Uchida’s book and his other books are reviewed here (also here and here)

The storyline is as follows.

  • Fox and Wolf sitting together and sipping tea at night. Shy Wolf wanted to ask something personal to Fox but did not have guts to ask. The question was “Were you also sad to be alone?”
  • While Wolf is struggling, Fox started to talk about his past. He once lived in the Fox Mountain where 80 kids foxes live. One day, eldest one in Mountain said to him “Your time has come. You are on your own now and ready to descent this mountain”    This apparently is the ritual of “Coming of Age” in this Fox mountain and that is how Fox transitions to adult Fox.
  • “Good-bye” “Take care” “See you!” all the friends waving, and he was waving back and started descending the mountain with quite a excitement and anticipation.
  • Wolf did not even ask whether Fox was lonely afterwards or not. Apparently, he was.  Wolf though “I hear you buddy. I have been there”    It appears Wolf had similar story why he gets to live in this area.
  • Soon after he arrived this forest from Mountain, Fox started the exercise including push-ups and rope skipping.  But Skipping rope reminded him about the days in Mountain with his old friends.  He realized he had no friend anymore.
  • He could not stand the loneliness and got sick of just waiting for something to happen. He grabbed the pen and cloth/stick and made big banner flag saying, “Friend Shop”. Fox started walking with his big banner flag “Friend Shop Here! Are there anybody lonely who needs friends?”   Wolf saw the banner and stopped Fox. Wolf continues “Hey, Fox…I am wondering..”    That was beginning of how they became friends.
  • Today, those two works as pair with same banner flag. They went into dark forest at night, looking for some potential customers. Remembering the happy moment when they met for first time, they wanted to share this feeling with others.   They walk and continues “We are Friends Shop Here.   Are there anybody lonely who needs friends?”  Then, the light of lantern was put off suddenly and they had nothing but moon light.
  • All of sudden, Wolf started singing out loud.  “♪Good-bye is the begging of meeting someone new. Loneliness is the beginning of meeting somebody new. Just like River meeting the Ocean, Just like Wolf meeting Fox, Oh dear God. Oh dear God♪”
  • Soon, Fox joined, and they continue to sing this song under beautiful moonlight, dropping tears on their cheek with joy to get to meet their buddy. 😊  (End of Story)

Quite touching, huh?  This includes quite important life lessons.  Needless to say, Good-bye isn’t the end of world at all. But I love the fact that Fox decided to act something spontaneously soon after he realize he was fed up with his current situation.  Probably he was not even sure if his “Friend Shop” works or not, but he just did it anyway.  Since I work for a company myself, I felt this story actually reminded me of the importance of entrepreneurship and agility to act quickly to make some magic happen & Sitting-and-Waiting does not produce anything.  Thus, this learning was a big bonus for me ! (not to my kids, though 😊 )
